Date: March 3, 2014
Who: Families with children who will turn four during the 2014 calendar year.
Where: Applications can be submitted online or at Enrollment Offices by borough. Information sessions will be offered during the month in all five boroughs. See below for specifics.
A wide array of free Pre-K options are available across the city starting in September 2014. Any family with a student who will turn 4 during 2014 is eligible. Programs include options both at public elementary schools and community-based organizations (CBOs) around the city. The DoE and CBOs involve different application processes, but both open to applications on March 3rd. The DoE continues accepting them now until April 23rd (extended from 4/1).
DoE applications can be submitted online or in person. You will need a valid email address and a physical street address (not a P.O. box) in order to determine your zone. CBO applications are also available for download at the DoE site, but they must be submitted directly to the programs themselves. Be aware: some CBO programs have family income requirements.
Remember, you can apply to multiple programs. Notifications will be sent out in early June and a pre-registration period will follow, June 9-20th.
All programs offer both half-day and full-day options. And all will teach students basic reading and math skills, among other things. Spaces are not guaranteed in DoE programs and generally favor students within the program's zoned area. All the same, we urge parents to inform themselves of all their options. School visits are highly recommended.
In the meantime, the DoE will be hosting information sessions by borough. All will run from 5:30-7:30pm.
