Who: 8th & 9th graders applying to New York City Specialized High Schools for entrance to 9th & 10th grade in Fall '15
What You Need In Order To Register: You should only need to speak with your guidance counselor at school. That said, students should know their mailing address and,in rare cases, might also need proof of residence and a birth certificate. If this is necessary, it become clear after first expressing interest in testing to a counselor.
Opening day of the Specialized High School application season! This is the first day you can sign up for the 2014 SHSAT and for auditions for the LaGuardia High School of Arts & Music and Performing Arts. Registration ends October 14, 2014. Do your best to approach your guidance counselor (or vice versa) about registering to take the SHSAT or audition for LaGuardia by late September. He or she should already have all of the pertinent information. However, school counselors have widely varying degrees of experience with this process. If your school has few students applying to the Specialized High Schools or your guidance counselor is unfamiliar with the process, Partners with Parents is happy to help. If you are a Sabbath observer or need testing accommodations as outlined in your IEP or approved 504 plan, you should tell your counselor when you register so you can be assigned the correct test or audition date. It will be your school's responsibility to submit the proper documentation if you have specific testing needs. On (or about) October 22, 2014, your admissions ticket for the test will become available. It will include your test date, time, location, and your current school code. You should double-check all of this information immediately and notify your counselor if your date conflicts with religious observance or you were given a date that does not support the accommodations you need. These are steps that need to be taken before your assigned test or audition day!
